Reasons for Feeling Tired All the Time

Even though it is very common, the constant exhaustion is definitely not normal condition. 

As a matter of fact, it is so common that it even has its own acronym, TATT, meaning “tired all the time”.

According to Dr. Rupal Shah, a GP in south London, exhaustion is the most common issue she sees in her office. She says: I see loads and loads of patients who complain of feeling exhausted, even though they’re sleeping well. Often it’s been going on for several months.”

According to the findings of the Royal College of Psychiatrist, one in five people feels tired, and one in ten people suffer from prolonged exhaustion. 

As additional information, women are more affected by this issue in comparison to men.

Dr Shah adds: “It’s unusual to find anything physically wrong. 

Most of the time, fatigue is linked with mood and the accumulation of lots of little stresses in life”.

Patients who are constantly complaining of tiredness are routinely taken a blood test. 

This is of vast importance because the blood test can identify some medical cause, such as underactive thyroid gland or anemia.

In addition, if the tiredness is accompanied with other symptoms as well, a medical reason is very likely to be the cause. 

Some of those symptoms can be the extreme thirst, weight loss, hair loss, heavy periods, a change in bowel habits etc.

The following points can help you work out how you become tired in the first place.

How your lifestyle may be making you tired

Parts of your life, such as work and family, that might be particularly tiring
Any events that may have triggered your tiredness, such as break- up
Physical Causes

There are numerous health conditions that can trigger the tiredness. 

Apart from the well-known such as thyroid problems and anemia, there are more surprising health issues, such as food intolerance, sleeping disorder called sleep apnoea, and diabetes.

In addition, being underweight or overweight may also cause tiredness. 

This happens because in such cases, the body is forced to work harder than usual in order to perform the everyday activities. 

If you are underweight, you may feel tired more quickly as a result to the less muscle strength.

Finally, pregnancy may also sap your energy, especially in the first 12 weeks.

Psychological Causes

The psychological tiredness is more common in comparison to the one caused by a physical problem.

The initial cause may be anxiety, which can cause insomnia, and of course persistent exhaustion. 

According to a survey conducted by Mental Health Foundation, nearly 1/3 of the population is severely sleep-deprived, mainly due to money and job worries. 

The report Sleep Matters, promotes the idea that insomnia and low energy levels are closely related.

Mental issues such as anxiety or depression can definitely make you feel more tired. 

Moreover, they can significantly affect your sleeping habits.

The worries of daily life can be really exhausting. 

Emotional shock, such as bad news or a brek up of a relationship can make you feel drained. 

However, the positive events, such as getting married or moving to a new house, are not an exception as well.

Lifestyle Causes

Having a bad diet and drinking too much alcohol are the most common lifestyle causes for tiredness.  

Drinking too much alcohol in the evening will make wake up in the middle of the night. 

If this becomes a habit, it can make you depressed and affect your sleep. Dr Shah says: “I’m always surprised to find how often patients who complain of tiredness are drinking far too much”.

The disturbed sleep pattern, mainly caused by looking after young children or working night shifts, is another common cause of tiredness. 

The thing is, it can be difficult to get a proper night`s sleep, and you will feel tired throughout the day.

How to Tackle Tiredness

As mentioned in the very beginning, although it may be common to feel tired all the time, it definitely isn’t normal. 

It is recommended to consult your doctor for reassurance and for advice. 

As Dr Shah explains, just knowing nothing is wrong can be reassuring in itself.
