Is Your Office Lighting Making You Ill?





The famous white fluorescent lighting tubes, used in many hospitals, offices, and schools nowadays, were initially compromised in health scares in the 1970s.  

The electromagnetic fields that surround the fluorescent tubes could be 4-6 times at a higher level than the accepted exposure levels for an office when sitting down. 

In addition, when you stand up, they can be up to 32 times.


In the beginning, the fluorescent lighting was meant to be a temporary, emergency feature that was planned to keep factories working 24 hours a day during WW2. 

It was never meant to come into such general usewoman-with-back-pain, but it managed to somehow take its stride. 

The fluorescent lighting is banned in hospitals and clinics in Germany, while back in 1982, it was put on a test into skin cancers, at the Sydney University, Australia.

Pupils and students are at risk from this type of lighting as well. 

Accoryding to a study which dealt with observing these lights, they cause hyperactive behavior, irritability, nervous fatigue, and lapses of attention. 





There is yet another study regarding this issue which was carried out by eight dentists. 

What they found is shocking! 

There was a notable increase in the number of tooth decay and cavities in those children working under fluorescent lights. 

Interestingly, all health issues such as electrical sensitivity, eye problems, and headaches, have been eliminated when the lights were replaced with full spectrum lighting. 

This basically imitates the effect of natural sunlight. 

An eminent London investment bank (using FSL) reports turnover, low staff illnesses as well as higher productivity.

Even though FSL is more expensive than florescent lighting, it is still more profitable, as it lasts twice as long. 

The increased productivity and the lowered absenteeism definitely make the FSL more cost effective solution long-term. 

So, if you plan on proposing your boss switching to FSL in the workplace, make sure you point out the many benefits.

Avoid Backache by Sitting Properly at Your Desk

While working, make sure your feet are kept firmly on the floor. 

Dangling legs create bad posture, affect your circulation, and potentially cause backache.





Beware the Strain of Working 8-Hour Days

A computer screen which is set at an uncomfortable angle or height can result in headaches, eye strain, visual fatigue, and soreness. 

Luckily, there is a very simple solution to this. 

Just adjust the position of your screen, and avoid the aforementioned 21st century work-related hazards.

While sitting comfortably and gazing at the computer screen, your eyes should “land” at the top of it. 

Otherwise, you are likely to face some eye related issues later.

It may be much easier to re-position the chair than the computer instead.

The screen should be arranged at 90 degrees to your desk in order to minimize the reflections from high windows and ceiling lights.

In addition, it is recommended to take regular breaks. 

Make at least 5 minutes break on each hour. 

This will rest your eyes and help you with the stress and fatigue, caused by the bright light that computer screens give off.

Streching Your Ankles could Ease Chronic Back Pain

The shortened Achilles tendons can lead to chronic back pain. 

In fact, they prevent you from walking well, by putting stress on your spine. 

The following tips will teach you how to reduce the risk to your back, by strengthening your tendons.

Face the wall and keep 60-90 cm away from it. 

Lean towards the wall, putting palms flat against it with both feet on the ground.

Move one foot ½ the distance to the wall. 

The other leg should be kept straight at the knee, with the heel flat on the floor.

Slowly and rhythmically bend the forward knee and both arms.

Keep the back heel on the floor and the tail tucked in at all times.

Do it for 20 seconds. Relax. Alternate between legs and make 10 repetitions.

How Leaning on a Wall Beats Back Strain and Injury

This exercise is very simple and it will take only few minutes of your time. 

It is really effective and it helps re-align the muscles in your back, helping undo the strains of everyday life.

Stand against the wall with your back and keep your feet 14-20 cm away from the skirting board.

Pull in your stomach muscles and try to flatten the small of your back against the wall. Don’t bend your knees.

Stay in this position for about five seconds, then relax and make five repetitions.

Make sure you breathe regularly and evenly during the whole exercise.

Avoid Computer-Related Hand and Wrist Injuries

This exercise should be performed every morning before work. 

Hold your arms straight in from of you. 

Lift the hands at 90 degrees and spread the fingers. 

Hold for five seconds, lower, and then relax. 

Clench the fists and lower the wrists at 90 degrees. 

Again hold for five seconds, straighten, and relax. 

Make ten repetitions, and repeat at lunchtime (prior starting with the afternoon work).
