A study of the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine showed that soda can shorten person`s lifespan. 

Researchers measured the length of the telomeres, the caps of the chromosomes which are related to cell aging. 

There were 5,000 people participating in the study, whose blood was tested. 

The results showed that beside the fact that they didn`t have any heart disease or diabetes, people who often consumed sugary beverages and soda had shorter telomeres than those who consumed it rarely.

How Dangerous is Drinking a lot of Soda

Short telomeres are related to faster and greater cellular aging. 

Based on the study results, people who consume 20 ounces of soda reduce their lifespan by almost 5 years. 



Shortening of the chromosomes is compared to everyday smoking. 

This means that drinking soda is equivalently dangerous as smoking cigarettes.

Everyday consumption of sweet beverages can lead to development of diseases because it affects the metabolic control over sugars. 

Moreover, drinking sodas can speed up the cell aging. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that consumption of sugary drinks and sodas is drastically increased in the past 30 years. 

This, in fact, can be related to the increased number of obese people.

What Consumers Need to Understand 

Nevertheless, people still consume soda every time they can. 

Some people even choose sodas over water, which is really concerning. 

This bad habit can cause many diseases such as diabetes, cancer, heart diseases, and a shorter lifespan. 





Even though the study confirmed that drinking noncarbonated drinks, fruit juices and diet sodas cannot be harmful, it is much healthier to drink water or drink tea.
