Who doesn’t love barbecue?

Barbecue is one of those few things that bring the whole family together, as well as friends and neighbors.

You can use charcoal, propane, and wood chips for the grill. However, these are not quite environment-friendly.

Fortunately, one genius invented the best barbecue-related solution, which does not affect the surrounding environment.

Wilson solar cookers sun without fuel

David Wilson, an MIT professor, created a solar cooker that works at night. This cooker is the perfect option for nations that use wood to fuel their stoves.

This piece of solar technology collects sun and stores the heat energy for up to 25 hours, and its temperatures reach an incredible  450 degrees Fahrenheit. 

The stove uses Fresnel lens to hold up the energy and a Lithium Nitrate container that plays the role of a thermal-storing battery for 25 hours.

Wilson explains:

“There are a lot of solar cookers out there, but surprisingly not many using latent-heat storage as an attribute to cook the food.”

While there have been solar cookers, ovens, and grills, we could only utilize them during the day. 

Unfortunately, we all enjoy our barbecue moments during the night!

Wilson’s idea was conceived after his visit to Nigeria. 

Wood is the most used fuel there when it comes to cooking, and this causes major problems like respiratory complications and deforestation. 

Women also face a huge risk of harassment and rape when they go to the bushes to search for firewood.

A team of successful MIT students is working on developing a prototype solar grill. 

Eric Uva, Derek Ham, and Theodora Vardouli are undertaking their own study during the multi-disciplinary “iTeams” , or “Innovation Teams” .

The study aims at assessing the concept and starting off a business that will make the solar barbecue available to anyone. 

The business would mainly target developing nations.
