Epsom salt consists of magnesium sulfate, a mineral compound that has many uses ranging from fertilizing your garden to nourishing your skin. 

It is usually added to baths in order to relax and recover muscles.

Epsom salt contains numerous minerals such as magnesium, which is easily absorbed by the skin if applied topically. 



Magnesium is a cofactor of over 300 enzymes in the body – it assists in energy production, reduces inflammation and helps the body normalize the levels of calcium, zinc, copper, potassium, vitamin D and other essential nutrients. 

It also helps in treating asthma, depression, diabetes, fibromyalgia, hearing loss, arrhythmia, heart failure, high blood pressure, migraines, osteoporosis, eclampsia, PMS and colorectal cancer.

Sulfate is important for liver detoxification. When added to a hot bath, the chemicals it releases stimulate serotonin production, a hormone that promotes calmness and relaxation.

How to use Epsom salts

The recommended amount of Epsom salts used in a bath is 2 cups with a soaking time of 12-15 minutes. 

However, David Jockers DC, MS, CSCS, suggests that the amount of the salts varies from person to person, and depends on their weight. 

He also recommends a soaking time of 20-40 minutes – the first 20 minutes will extract all toxins from the body, while the last 20 minutes will allow the body to absorb minerals.

Here are the quantities of Epsom salt he recommends:

Children under 60 lbs: ½ cup

Individuals between 60-100 lbs: 1 cup

Individuals between 100-150 lbs: 1½ cups

Individuals between 150-200 lbs: 2 cups

For every 50lbs more – add an additional ½ cup of salts.

In order to improve the detox process, brush your skin with a dry brush for 5 minutes before the soak to open up your pores and move the lymph around, or use half a cup of raw apple cider vinegar for a deep body detox.

For a relaxing bath, add a few drops of lavender essential oil or a few tablespoons of baking soda. 

If you want to hydrate your skin, add some coconut oil in your bath.
