Many people buy potatoes in large quantities and store them for future use. It may be shocking for you to learn that potatoes, just like any other food, have an expiration date. Hence, the next time you reach for a potato to prepare it, check its condition. This is especially important if you have potatoes in your home that have been sitting out for a long time.

Rotten Potatoes Caused Death

We will share with you a shocking true story. A family kept potatoes in the cellar for a longer period of time and as a result, an 8-year old girl was left without her parents. This is a case of 8-year-old Maria Chelysheva in Russia, who lost her family in a freak, tragic accident. This accident happened because of the potatoes they stored in their cellar.

Maria’s father went to the cellar to fetch some potatoes, but he never came back up. Maria’s mother, desperate to find her husband went down after him. She didn’t return, too. The same thing happened to Maria’s brother, and then her grandmother because everyone went down in the cellar.

Why are Rotten Potatoes Dangerous?

Sounds unbelievable, you think? However, it turns out that rotten potatoes can be in fact very dangerous. Potatoes contain glycoalkaloids, a chemical compound that is also found in poisonous nightshade plants. Hence, when they go bad, this vegetable becomes toxic and deadly, especially when the potatoes are kept in hot conditions. Simply inhaling the toxins is enough to kill.

You should know that fresh potatoes are healthy and pose no harm. However, if you consume potatoes which turned green or have grown new sprouts, you may experience potato plant poisoning or potato toxicity. Moreover, when potatoes are forgotten and they rotten, they exude toxic fumes, which can be deadly. To ensure your potatoes are safe, store them in a dark, cool place and check their condition from time to time.
