Every house contains at least one type of dish soap we use every day.
However, most of these products are full of harmful chemicals that can put your health at risk and increase the risk of several diseases and conditions. Some dish soaps contain too much fragrance, while others are rich in formaldehyde, silicate salts, sulfuric acid and ammonium sulfate. According to a research by the Environmental Working Group, the chemical can cause skin allergies and irritation as well as some types of cancer. Formaldehyde has been known to cause asthma and other respiratory disorders, as well as eye damage, severe skin burns and systematic organ failure.

Silicate salts

These salts have been found in Palmolive and are related to skin and eye irritation. The FDA has classified them as generally safe if present in low amounts, but they are still related to numerous health problems.

Sulfuric acid

Sulfuric acid has been found in Palmolive and Ajax and is associated with skin burns, allergies, eye damage and dermatitis. It is a known carcinogen, but the FDA considers it generally safe.

Ammonium sulfate

This compound has been found in Palmolive and Ajax and is a known skin irritant that may cause respiratory disorders and even cancer.


Fragrance can be found in almost all dish soaps. The most common type of fragrance used in these products is pentasodium pentetate which can cause skin and eye irritation. Although the Environmental Working Group considers it a substance of low concern, we suggest avoiding fragranced dish soaps whenever possible.
